It's a week until the 2013 Speedway NZ AGM kicks off, and its shaping up to be one of the biggest national speedway gatherings of all time. A good portion of those coming to the Awards have opted to attend the AGM as an observer, so we hope they have a better understanding of how the sport operates by the conclusion of the weekend.

Stockcar Shock Absorbers
  Published: 30/12/2012
Stockcars are required to run OEM replacement Shock Absorbers, and in the December 2012 SNZ Update we clarified the need for competitors to provide proof that their shocks are compliant.

Over the last few days we have received information from various suppliers that has been collected into a handy database. The information on the downloadable shock absorber database outlines the vehicles that the relevant part numbers are OEM replacements for.

Important points to note are:-
  1. Competitors using the shocks listed in the database do not need to provide proof that their shocks are OEM replacement.
  2. Shocks other than those listed in the database can be used, but the onus is on the competitor to provide proof that they are an OEM replacement part.
This database will be added to as more information comes to hand, but in the meantime it should make things easier for competitors at this busy time of year.

You can download the database here (80KB pdf).

Jake Pulman, NZOM
  Published: 10/04/2012
Speedway in New Zealand has lost one of the giants of the sport, with the passing of Jake Pulman on Saturday April 7.

The longest serving official in speedway history, Jake began officiating in 1968 and continued in various roles up until 2012. He was the Chief Stipendiary Steward (Head Official) for the sport from 1982-2012, and during that time became a familiar face at all Speedway NZ tracks.

After losing the use of his legs in a crash at Waiwakaiho Speedway (New Plymouth), one could be forgiven from turning away from speedway - but Jake did the opposite and dedicated the rest of his life to the sport. From officiating at race meetings to undertaking track inspections and officials training, attending board meetings, being on Technical and Safety committees, dealing with external agencies, appeals, action committees and complaints, and acting as a sounding board and mentor, Jake undertook pretty much every possible role within the sport.

This lifetime of service was recognised in 1996 when he was awarded Speedway NZ life membership, and 2005 when he received the NZ Order of Merit for services to speedway. He leaves big shoes to be filled by the organisation, and is the second life member to pass on after the longest serving President Spike Richardson in 2008.

Farewell Jake, from your colleagues and friends at Speedway New Zealand.

Ray Channing
  Published: 26/02/2012
Speedway NZ joins with the rest of the speedway community in sending its condolences to the family and friends of Ray Channing, who tragically passed away at Huntly Speedway on 25 February 2012. This is a sad and difficult time for everyone involved in the sport, with Ray a widely respected as both a long serving competitor and engine sealing official. His immaculately presented 89r Stockcar was a familiar site at many North Island tracks, and he also assisted many other competitors via his auto machinists business.

A full investigation into the accident is underway, with Speedway NZ conducting its own enquiry and providing full assistance to relevant external agencies. This will take some time to complete, but in the interim the thoughts and focus of the entire speedway fraternity is on comforting and supporting Ray's extended family, friends, crew and supporters.

RIP, Ray.

Speedway NZ Now on Facebook
  Published: 8/11/2011
Speedway New Zealand has joined the digital age with the launch of its own Facebook page, which will hopefully change the way that the sport interacts with its audience. Over summer there is plenty happening on a daily basis, and Speedway NZ aims to get the word out as quickly as possible.

While a good proportion of competitors, tracks and fans have been active on the social media platform for many years, it's taken a fundamental change in philosophy to get Speedway NZ onto Facebook. Allowing comment and discussion to blossom on an SNZ forum is the ultimate proof that the governing body is aiming to be an efficient and transparent organisation, that exists to further the sport and benefit its stakeholders.

What's going to change? Currently Speedway NZ's issue news on a monthly basis via the SNZ Update, but our approach will now be to publicise information on a much more regular basis. The update will still be an important part of the way we communicate (it's required under the constitution), but much of the content will already have been available on Facebook and/or the SNZ website.

Want to take a look at the Speedway NZ Facebook page? Here's the link - www.facebook.com/SpeedwayNZ... and don't forget you can become a fan by clicking the Like button!

Stockcars & Superstocks - Front Wheel Hubs
  Published: 20/01/2011
An incident occurred at Rotorua last weekend, when a spectator was struck by a wheel that departed from a Superstock. In accordance with Rule C8(k)*, all aluminium front wheel hubs on Superstocks and Stockcars are now banned, pending further investigation.

This is effective immediately. Speedway NZ appreciates that there will be inconvenience to some competitors in terms of the time and cost to modify their vehicles, but this needs to be balanced against the need to maintain the highest possible safety requirements.

Please pass this information onto competitors who may be affected, so that they can make the changes in time to compete this weekend.

* Note: Rule C8(k) in the 2009 orange rulebook enables the Directors of Speedway NZ to alter or add to the regulations of any class, if an urgent safety issue is identified which requires prompt resolution to ensure the ongoing safety of the sport. This is also covered in Rule C11(i) of the 2010 constitution.

Wheel Blitz This Weekend
  Published: 16/11/2010

Speedway NZ is undertaking a technical blitz on wheels this weekend, to ensure all vehicles running steel wheels are doing so in accordance with the regulations.

The requirement for steel wheels to be date stamped is a fundamental safety issue, and a random inspection at one track last weekend saw 40 cars running without stamped wheels. The consequences of an unstamped wheel departing from a car do not bear thinking about, so a nationwide reminder to all competitors and officials is necessary to ensure compliance.

All steel wheels in use this season need to be inspected and date stamped "T5" by Vehicle Checkers, so if this isn't the case you may want to turn up to the track a little earlier this weekend, to ensure your wheels are stamped correctly.

Saloon Specifications
  Published: 2/11/2010
A booklet has been released online that may be of interest to Saloon competitors. It contains the latest list of SNZ-approved Saloon body dimensions, with photographs to verify the profile/shape of the production vehicles.

The requirement for Saloon measurements to be held on file at the SNZ Office has been in force for 20 years, but by making the information available to everyone, the process becomes fairer and more transparent.

If you are currently running a vehicle that is not on the list of approved makes and models, then you need to get in touch with SNZ to get the registration process underway.

Technical Remits Released
  Published: 1/11/2010
Technical remits for those classes utilising the AGM rulemaking process closed on 1 October, and these are now available for members and other interested parties to download. Over 110 remits were received, spread over the Saloon, Modified, Superstock , Stockcar and Streetstock classes.

The relevant technical committees are now tasked with investigating the remits, and making any revisions they think are necessary. They have until mid February to complete this task.

Remits for constitutional, general, racing, safety and equipment rules close on ANZAC Day 2011, while proposed rule changes for all other classes can be submitted at any time. Plenty of submissions have already been received, so these have also been included to maximise the time for them to be discussed and reviewed.

The remit documentation also includes the process for each type of submission, and is available to download here (350KB pdf).

Kihikihi/Fidelity Fund Update
  Published: 27/08/2010
In the August update (issued August 10) it was noted that Kihikihi Speedway had its membership of Speedway NZ suspended due to successful claims for unpaid prizemoney from competitors to the Fidelity Fund.

We can now advise that Kihikihi have met their obligations to the fund in full, and the suspension imposed on the track has been lifted from today (August 27).

With the new season about to roar into life this is a welcome boost for the sport, and we wish Kihikihi and all other tracks a successful summer of racing in 2010/11.
